Eye health tests

Vision is more than sight. Healthy image receptors are essential for good vision. If our eyes don't see properly, our brain won't either.

An annual checkup is necessary to detect any abnormalities in our eye health. At Visual Advancement, we perform:

Retinography

This test provides an image of the fundus of the eye. Technically, it's a simple and painless procedure that requires no prior preparation or anesthesia. It involves taking a photograph of the inside of the eye. This photograph provides information on the patient's circulatory status and allows us to observe the retina and optic nerve head.

When observing the interior of the eye, four important structures are studied: the retinal tissue, the macula (the central area responsible for high-precision vision), the optic nerve head, and the circulation or blood vessels that feed the retina.

It is essential to have an annual fundus examination, and a graphical test is highly recommended to assess possible changes over time, especially in patients with the following conditions:

  • High myopia : since these patients have a higher risk of retinal pathologies (macular diseases, retinal detachments, etc.)
  • Diabetes : since it causes the vascular walls of the eye to weaken and this can be a significant risk that can even cause blindness.
  • Glaucoma : glaucoma that affects the visual field.

Topography

Corneal topography is a tool that allows us to analyze the shape of the cornea. It is a rapid test that performs a precise, three-dimensional examination of the cornea. Corneal topographers perform a complete analysis of the anterior and posterior surfaces of the cornea. It provides precise images that we use to make a comprehensive diagnosis and determine the most appropriate treatment.

It is extremely important in disorders such as keratoconus and is a necessary test before and after refractive surgery.

Its most common use is for proper contact lens fitting; by performing corneal topography, we ensure that the contact lens fitting fully matches the patient's corneal parameters.

It is important to note that this test is non-invasive and does not cause any discomfort to the patient.

Tonometry

It's a test that measures the pressure inside the eyes. This test is very important for detecting and treating glaucoma.

The method we use is air tonometry.

The air tonometer is a device that measures intraocular pressure by means of a puff of air, thus eliminating any contact with the patient's eye. The main advantage of this method is that there is no risk of eye damage, as there is no contact with the device.

Pachymetry

Pachymetry is a diagnostic test that measures corneal thickness. The cornea is the transparent layer of tissue that covers the anterior part of the eye, and its typical thickness is between 500 and 600 microns in its central part and between 600 and 800 microns in the peripheral area. Corneal thickness is a variable to consider when diagnosing diseases such as glaucoma and when administering certain treatments.

It is simple, painless, and causes no discomfort, and only requires stopping wearing contact lenses for a few days beforehand.

Pupillometry

Pupillometry is a diagnostic test that allows us to measure pupil size under different lighting conditions. Recently, the importance of pupil measurement has been emphasized, as it is essential in refractive surgery and the implantation of some types of intraocular lenses, and highly recommended for the fitting of certain types of contact lenses.
